STEAM into Science – Kindergarten – Grade 8 Learn by Doing

The STEAM reader was designed to introduce STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math),
in an integrated fashion, instead of the traditionally separated method. This approach is more relevant
to everyday life where the STEAM disciplines are encountered in an integrated manner. Additionally,
research has shown that students exposed to STEM and STEAM in early childhood through a hands-onapproach
are positively inclined towards these disciplines as they progress up the educational ladder.
The STEAM reader books are designed to teach science concepts through stories relevant to the world of
seventh-grade students while at the same time providing integrated opportunities to teach technology,
engineering, arts, and math with science. Each chapter has been crafted with stories to engage the
student in reading. At the end of each chapter, there is an activities section that includes opportunities for
collaborative class discussion and activities to reinforce the STEAM content.
The chapters may be read in any order to align with an individualized curriculum pacing. However, to
help with planning, an Essential Content Guide can be found in the appendices. This section highlights
key topics within each chapter and its associated activities section.

TPS Publishing Inc. and partners have constructed the ‘STEAM INTO SCIENCE’ program with the intent to enhance the science learning and teaching in schools in your state.
Through adhering to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills student expectations and break outs for science, the program presents science as a way of thinking and learning, incorporating literacy skills necessary for academic success in acquiring Science as an academic language. TPS content is underpinned with a strategy of teaching science with literacy, and focus was given to ensuring all English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) were met.
Teachers can get more detailed information about the program by reading the Teacher Program Guide covering the grades being taught.
The program has been built through a collaborative effort by several companies, each of which have expertise in science instructional design. They share a commitment to activity-based instruction. The diversity of writers and perspectives ensures that the material is inclusive.
